ChrisCorps has the same legal status with the IRS as an association of churches. It has the same tax exempt benefits as a 501(c)(3), but no application or 990 tax forms are required.
Therefore, a 508 has the same 1st Amendment religious protections as a church, which provides greater legal coverage. This is why other national ministries such as Focus On The Family and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association switched from being a 501(c)(3) to a 508(c)(1)(A).
